Interoperability Essay Example for Free
Interoperability Essay Interoperability has been described as the extent in which systems and devices can exchange data and translate that shared information. It is the ability of one system to perform work in addition with other systems without asking for too much hard work from the other users. This system enhances the importance for information technology to make the networks and integrations work. In order for the process to function properly the two systems that are attempting to share information must be able to exchange data and introduce that same information to other users in a way that he or she can understand it. There are many organizations in the business world and many have different operating systems. The importance of interoperability in this aspect is to allow each organization to share important information amongst one another. An example would be if an organization such as Child Protective Services (CPS) wanted to share client information with another Protective Services agency regarding a client both organizations should be able to exchange and translate information amongst coordinating organizations. Child Protective Services Child Protective Services (CPS) is known as major department with the Department of Human Services. CPS supports and maintains the social and economic welfare of children by offering services to children to help protect them from abuse and/or child neglect. The Department of Humans Services in California offers CPS to families. CPS serves as mandated reports as well as an organization to protect children from neglect or abuse within the home, from his or her family, foster home or anyone responsible for the care of the child. The services of CPS are to provide protection to the children, provide resources to enable to child to remain residing in the home under safe and harmless circumstances. Also to remove abused or neglected children from the home and to possibly terminate any parental or guardian rights to ensure that the child will be eliminated from any potential danger or harm. The basic constituent of the process include: providing any and all services to minimize potential harm to children and provide resources to families to help them protect and provide appropriate care to his or her child. Next, is to provide the best services possible to meet each child and families unique needs. Last, taking each allegationà made seriously and assessing the allegations to the best of oneââ¬â¢s ability to ensure that if there is any form of abuse or neglect the necessary steps occur in order to protect the child. The services of CPS are to intervene if necessary and protect children until his or her parent is capable to doing so. The most essential aspect of CPS is to recognize the protection of children and to ensure that reasonable efforts are made to maintain children safely in their own home, to reunite the family as soon as the courts see fit or to find permanency for the child if the situation permits for the parental rights to be voided. Other services inc lude mental health, counseling, parenting skills training, medical care/services and adoption services. Methods of Interoperability There are several different methods to implement interoperability. Many organizations have created their own interoperability methods. One of the methods of interoperability is technical interoperability, which is the ability for different technologies to communicate and exchange data-based upon well-defined interface standards. The second is semantic interoperability, which is the ability to each endpoint to communicate data and have the receiving party understand the message in the sense intended by the sending party. The third is policy interoperability, which is the common business policies and processes related to the transmission, receipt and acceptance of data between systems, which a legal framework supports. Advantages and Disadvantages Conclusion Interoperability has been described as the extent in which systems and devices can exchange data and translate that shared information. Interoperability has many advantages and disadvantages. The goal of CPS is to find avenues to execute full backups bi-weekly and this process will be complemented daily. This organization will also implement an extended back up program monthly.

OECD Countries and Iran Essay Example for Free
OECD Countries and Iran Essay As internet is gradually maturing and presenting a paradigm shift in its very ideation, the infrastructure has acquired a business character, a transcontinental personality and a vending framework of wide-ranging, business, educational, scientific and personal data. Now the use of internet covers real-time computer conferencing, audio broadcasting, video broadcasting, real time telephony and of course real-time business. Therefore, broadband is one of the finest and reliable means of having internet at affordable prices. Globalization has opened up newer vistas of trade and business all around the globe. With globalization regime coming into effect all over the world, thereââ¬â¢s increasing emphasis towards networking and broadband technologies. During 1996-2001 Ireland has shown the highest share of ICT exports while Korea took the lead after 2002. Finland and the Netherlands started making rapid strides in the field of ICT exports during 1996-2003. Japan used to be the leader in innovation, quality and ICT applications, but with the emergence of new actors like Hungary, Mexico, Finland and Sweden on the horizon, Japanââ¬â¢s export market share has come down in the recent past. During the course of this study, it was found that the share of ICT exports in total exports from OECD nations has increased in almost all countries. For example, in South Korea it has more than doubled, while in some countries like United States and United Kingdom and Japan it has decreased to some extent. The results show that in 1996, the major players namely U. S. A, United Kingdom and Japan had 54. 37% of total OECD export but in 2004 this percentage came down to 40. 21%. While the Balassa index of Korea is the highest from 2000 and during selected time period (1996-2004), while the Balassa index of Germany is somewhat less. United state and Japan are surely losing some export market shares with the emergence of new leading nations like Hungary, Finland and Czech Republic. The results show that in 1996, 2003 and 2004 only 9 countries have shown comparative advantage in ICT export products. It is interesting to note that out of these 9 countries, 8 countries have been able to show consistent performance in 1996 as well as in 2003, while Sweden happened to be the leader in 1996 duly replaced by Hungary in 2003 which came out with impressive figures of ICT exports. Figures for 2004 and 1996 indicate that 7 countries are the same while Hungary and Czech Republic join the club in 2004. But the Korean republic, United States, Japan and Mexico have come out with impressive figures and find a place in the all three list. This effectively means that only 5 countries of EU are in the list. As is evident from table 6, there is no country from Central European region in list for the year 1996. But in subsequent years representation from this region has shown some improvement. The list contains one name in 2003 and two countries from Central European region in 2004. It means the role of Central European countries in ICT export goods is on an upward journey and will increase in future as well. The Middle East countries: Lesser ICT export oriented The results show that the ICT export has a positive situation in Israel. Similarly Jordan, Lebanon and Oman appear far better than other countries in the region. But with the exception of Israel, the ICT export has not been able to register much of gain in this region and the entire middle appears slow in picking up the benefits of ICT exports. The RCA index of Israel is more than 5 during 1996-2003. It means ICT exports in Israel have an important position. The RCA index of Jordan is under 1, but it increased during 1996-2003. The RCA indexes of other countries in Middle East are almost near Zero. It means that ICT export in these countries has not found a significant role. The result demonstrates that countries with lower DSL/Cable Ratio have higher broadband penetration (except Iceland). It indicates Countries with higher broadband penetration have significant facilities-based competition between telecom companies offering DSL and cable TV operators and therefore the DSL/Cable ratio in these countries is low. The result also shows negative relation between DSL subscribers and Monthly charge. It means countries with lower Monthly charge have more DSL subscribers. The distribution of countries in the graph is very wide and far from correlation Line. It means correlation is not strong. Similarly, the result shows direct relation between DSL subscribers and Speed of Connection. It shows where the Speed of connection is higher, there are more DSL Subscribers. Weââ¬â¢ve used the regressionââ¬â¢ coefficient for measuring the correlation between two variables namely ââ¬ËMonthly Chargeââ¬â¢ and ââ¬ËSpeed of Connectionââ¬â¢ on dependent variable namely ââ¬ËDSL subscribersââ¬â¢. The results show that; ? On an average 33% changing of DSL Subscribers is from Monthly Charge and Speed of Connection and rest is from other variables. It says influence of Speed on DSL Subscribers is more than the influence of Monthly Charge on DSL Subscribers. In addition, it says that the Influence of Monthly charge on DSL Subscribers is negative i. e. with decrease in Monthly Charge the number of DSL Subscribers will register an increase. ? The relation between Broadband subscribers and ICT export is very strong in Middle East. It says 98% changing of Broadband Subscribers in Middle East is related to ICT Exports. In general, the result can be considered as relevant for other countries as well, but since there are not many countries with Broadband subscribers, therefore the results cannot be termed as reflective of the internet penetration for all Middle East countries. ? That there isnââ¬â¢t a correlation between DSL subscribers and ICT exports in OECD countries. The result shows only 3% changing of Broadband Subscribers in OECD countries is related to ICT Export. It supports the Idea that there isnââ¬â¢t correlation between DSL subscribers and ICT export. ? That thereââ¬â¢s no relationship between GDP and three factors (Internet, Mobile, Fixed telephone). The GDP has not been found to have an influence in the penetration of Internet, Mobile and Fixed telephone in Middle East. ? The relation between Population and Internet users is positive and implies direct association (in Middle East). ? A direct relation between population and Mobile users (Middle East). ? The relation between Population and Fixed telephone users is positive and it implies direct association (Middle East). Conclusion and Policy Recommendation for OECD It is quite apparent that OECD region is rapidly becoming a region with deep penetration of ICT technology. In addition in todayââ¬â¢s era of Information Technology the world is increasingly becoming networked, technical, and closer to each other. Over the years IT has led to revolutionizing the way business is conducted, education is imparted, we communicate, we socialize, illness is cured etc. IT has made its mark in almost all spheres of life. Increasing use of DSL/ broadband technology by the citizens in general is therefore an healthy sign. Therefore it is quite encouraging that OECD nations have not only improved their performance in implementing IT initiatives but have also improved the percentage of exports to the outside world. That speaks volumes about the emphasis that these nations have been placing on quality and future readiness of these nations. It is therefore worthwhile to mention here that, for becoming more competitive and success oriented, the OECD nations; i. Must try to see the reasons behind the increasing emphasis of outsourcing towards the Asian region in general and India and China in particular. ii. Implement more such policies encouraging the IT industries. iii. The training and development opportunities in this field must be strengthened because, newer technologies and concepts are emerging faster on the horizon, and the students need to be aware of all such developments to competitively take on the world. Conclusion and Policy Recommendation for Iran Iran is a formidable component of Middle East formation. Though, Iran has been known as a progressive nation amongst Islamic nations, but the extent of IT penetration amongst the citizens in general requires more thinking. The fact that a strong relationship is found to exist between the Broadband subscribers and ICT exports is a pointer towards the readiness of the people in taking up the ICT initiatives. Moreover, Iran in particular needs to put more emphasis in imparting future ready education to its citizens and the students, the budding IT citizens of tomorrow. E-commerce and M-commerce are the trendy application of this IT era. Now a company or business entity has plenty of avenues to reach to the customer. Business on the move is the latest addition. Iran could very well prove to be an attractive market for the multinational enterprises, a cheaper manufacturing hub for the production oriented companies and an upcoming outsourcing destination for the IT companies. So there needs to be more emphasis on strengthening the communication networks, which provides an opportunity for indulging in reliable m-commerce activities, besides imparting quality education to the youth. A number of business establishments and financial institutions the world over have already explored the use of mobile commerce through mobile banking to broaden their reach by letting their customers access their account information and make transactions through their mobile phones. Similarly online trading in debt and equity instruments, mobile brokerage have empowered the common investor and made the share market more transparent and investor friendly. All these revolutionary concepts of Information Technology have the potential of substantially enhancing the work performances, but these gains prove elusive if the user cannot use the technological gadget to its fullest advantage. Therefore Iran needs to be more forthcoming these innovative ideas for a better tomorrow and a formidable place for itself in the Middle East formation.
Creative Writing Piece on Friendship
Creative Writing Piece on Friendship ââ¬ËTIL THE END February 14th, 2014 As I filled my last luggage, I looked around my, now empty, room. My last hour here, in New York. I guess it didnââ¬â¢t matter anymore, since all my friends had left me; they all turned their backs on me when I needed them the most. On the bright side, my departure would be less painful, since there was no one to be missed. It was a bright sunny day of August and I was moving; to start a new life in California. We had been driving for four straight hours now, and there was no turning back. I was sitting in the passenger seat alongside my mother, who was driving silently. The last few months had been very dark, filled with sadness. Ever since the incident, we had barely said a word to each other, for the time had been too painful to even think. ââ¬Å"This is it,â⬠she smiled. ââ¬Å"Our new home. The moving trucks will arrive soon, so go ahead, go take a look at your new room. I got the whole house painted a while ago, your room is a light cream color, just as you love.â⬠ââ¬Å"Thank you.â⬠I gently hugged her, and entered the house to find my beloved room. Even if the house was a lot smaller than my older one, this room was bigger. Indeed, the color she chose was gorgeous. ââ¬Å"This is the start of something new,â⬠I thought. ââ¬Å"Meet new people, make new memories, and forget the old ones that haunt me.â⬠My thoughts disconnected when the doorbell rang. ââ¬Å"Probably the moving trucks,â⬠I thought, going downstairs to open the door. To my surprise, there stood a boy, probably my age, smiling. ââ¬Å"Hey, Iââ¬â¢m Scott, and Iââ¬â¢m your new neighbour,â⬠he smiled, warmly. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m Paige, nice to meet you,â⬠I smiled back. He had crystal clear, blue eyes, lightly ruffled brown hair, and an irresistible smile. He was a little taller than me, which made me look up every time he spoke. ââ¬Å"Do you want me to show you around?â⬠He asked, politely. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t-ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Sure she can!â⬠My mother cut me off. ââ¬Å"Paige, just be home by supper.â⬠And out I was, with a guy I barely knew, wondering around the streets of a town I barely knew. ââ¬Å"This is the park I often go to with my friends,â⬠he pointed out to a cute little playground, with a vast area of grass. ââ¬Å"Do you have a lot of friends?â⬠ââ¬Å"I have a few,â⬠he laughed. ââ¬Å"Oh, and, this is the school I go to, probably the one youââ¬â¢ll be attending, too, since itââ¬â¢s the only one around.â⬠I looked up at him, and smiled. Why couldnââ¬â¢t we have more guys as sweet as him in my old town? Most of them were jerks. ââ¬Å"By the way, how old are you?â⬠He asked. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m fifteen, but Iââ¬â¢ll be sixteen in a few days, but, you know, whatever,â⬠I laughed. ââ¬Å"You?â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m sixteen. I actually turned that age a few days ago!â⬠ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s great! Happy late birthday, I guess,â⬠I giggled. ââ¬Å"Thanks.â⬠As we walked back home, I couldnââ¬â¢t have felt happier. I just hoped my mother wouldnââ¬â¢t ask too many questions. ââ¬Å"Your mom told you to be home by supper, so here you are. See you around then?â⬠He smiled. ââ¬Å"See you around,â⬠I smiled back. Luckily, my mother didnââ¬â¢t ask too many questions. The rest of the week went by very quickly, and I didnââ¬â¢t even get to see Scott again. The next thing I knew, it was my first day at a new school. As I stepped outside, I noticed him sitting on my porch. ââ¬Å"You didnââ¬â¢t really think I was going to let you go to school alone on your first day?â⬠He got up. ââ¬Å"Actually, I did. But Iââ¬â¢d definitely love to walk to school with you,â⬠I smiled. During the whole walk, he spent most of the time asking me about my home town, but never asked about my friends. ââ¬Å"So, what do your friends think about this whole moving thing?â⬠The only question I didnââ¬â¢t want to answer. Crap. ââ¬Å"Well, um, you seeâ⬠¦ I donââ¬â¢t really have any friends. They all left me after, um, something happened.â⬠ââ¬Å"What happened?â⬠He looked confused. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s a long story.â⬠I barely knew him. Could I trust him? Yet, he was my only friend. He stopped. ââ¬Å"We have time,â⬠he smiled. ââ¬Å"Classes donââ¬â¢t start until an hour from now. I checked my schedule, and weââ¬â¢re in most of the same classes, by the way,â⬠He smiled. ââ¬Å"Well, umâ⬠¦ Basically, my father left town for a week, for a business trip. Three days after his departure, someone he worked with called us, and told us that he, umâ⬠¦ He died. A heart attack.â⬠Oh god, my eyes were already teary. Surprisingly, he wrapped me in his arms. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢ve never told anyone before me, huh? It showsâ⬠¦ Your emotions. Donââ¬â¢t worry, Iââ¬â¢ll never leave your side.â⬠He squeezed me tighter. I felt secure in his arms. After wiping away my tears, and fixing my mascara using my phone as a mirror, we continued our walk to school. It was huge. The walls were tall and full of colourful designs; my old school was nothing compared to this. ââ¬Å"What do you think?â⬠he asked. ââ¬Å"I think I think itââ¬â¢s amazing! I hope the people here are just as great,â⬠I joked. ââ¬Å"Um Depends who,â⬠he laughed. I guessed that was reassuring. He showed me around, and then led me to my locker. It wasnââ¬â¢t far from his, so I at least knew someone nearby. During the two first periods, we didnââ¬â¢t do much in class. The teacher introduced me to everyone, and made me talk a bit about where I came from. A few people came to talk to me, which was really sweet. One girl, Angel, helped me to organize my locker according to my schedule, and helped me around when Scott wasnââ¬â¢t there. Scott. He was probably with his friends, which I havenââ¬â¢t met yet. They must be cool. ââ¬Å"Paige, do you want to have lunch with me, today? Well, me and my friends,â⬠Angel asked. ââ¬Å"Um, sure! Iââ¬â¢ll just go tell Scott to not look for me.â⬠ââ¬Å"Scott, huh? Yeah, heââ¬â¢s a really nice guy.â⬠She smiled. ââ¬Å"Indeed, he is,â⬠I smiled back. Then I left to go find him. He was at his locker, and to my surprise, he was alone. ââ¬Å"Scott! Hey!â⬠I approached his locker. ââ¬Å"Oh, hey. How were your first classes?â⬠He asked. ââ¬Å"They were cool. I met a girl, Angel Well, Iââ¬â¢m actually going to have lunch with her!â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh, um, really?â⬠He looked at me. ââ¬Å"I I thought Um, anyway, just Her friends Be careful. Sheââ¬â¢s sweet, but the othersâ⬠He stopped. ââ¬Å"What about the others?â⬠ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t like to judge. Have a nice lunch, though, see you soon.â⬠Then, he left. What was wrong with him? Anyway, I left to go find Angel, who was sitting with four other girls. ââ¬Å"Hey, Paige! Over here!â⬠Angel shouted. I smiled, and walked to her table. As I sat next to her, one of her friends whispered to another. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s the new girl, right?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah I didnââ¬â¢t think Angel would actually go talk to her Urgh, that girl is too sweet And that wasnââ¬â¢t a compliment.â⬠ââ¬Å"Why is the new girl even eating with us?â⬠ââ¬Å"Well, Iââ¬â¢m pretty sure she doesnââ¬â¢t have any friends here She probably wonââ¬â¢t make any, either.â⬠Then they laughed. They thought I couldnââ¬â¢t hear them, but I could. And it felt like my old high school all over again. ââ¬Å"Paige Are you alright?â⬠Angel looked at me. I couldnââ¬â¢t hold back the tears anymore, this was too much. ââ¬Å"I Iââ¬â¢m sorry, I have to go.â⬠And with that, I left the cafeteria, my face dripping with soaked mascara, trying to find a place to hide. ââ¬Å"Paige Paige! PAIGE, SLOW DOWN!â⬠I heard someone scream. Then, someone grabbed my arm, and turned me around; It was Scott. ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t Scottâ⬠My breathing was uneven. ââ¬Å"What happened? Wait Donââ¬â¢t answer that The girls, huh?â⬠I was incapable of saying a single word. I just looked up at him, trying to wipe away the tears. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s what happens when you donââ¬â¢t listen to my warningâ⬠He giggled, and wrapped me in his arms. We stayed like that, until someone came. ââ¬Å"Oh god, Paige! Iââ¬â¢m so sorry about my friends They always do that to the new kids I shouldââ¬â¢ve just spent my lunch time with you, alone! I Wait, am I interrupting something?â⬠She smirked. ââ¬Å"No, oh, no, haha! Itââ¬â¢s fine, I donââ¬â¢t blame you,â⬠I smiled. She gave me a gentle squeeze. ââ¬Å"Tomorrow. Just the three of us,â⬠she winked, and then left. The rest of the day went perfectly fine, with my new friends. Actually, the six months that followed were probably the best six months Iââ¬â¢ve ever lived. Scott and I become extremely close, to the point where I started to feel something for him. That feeling made me a little uncomfortable, since we were only friends. Yet, he didnââ¬â¢t seem to be himself, lately, eitherâ⬠¦. Today, a Saturday, we were going to spend the day together, Scott and I. He said he had something important to tell meâ⬠¦. I wonder whatâ⬠¦ Just then, someone knocked on the door. ââ¬Å"Hey!â⬠He chirped. ââ¬Å"Hey,â⬠I smiled. I told my mother that I was leaving, then left with Scott to a park nearby. We sat on the bench, and stayed there, in an awkward silence, for about five minutes. ââ¬Å"Scott, what was that important thing you needed to tell me?â⬠I asked. ââ¬Å"Um, well, umâ⬠¦ Listenâ⬠¦ Iâ⬠¦ I justâ⬠¦ Would youâ⬠¦ I meanâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ What? At that moment, I felt his hands turn my face against his, and gently pressing his lips against mine. It felt like an explosion of paradiseâ⬠¦ And questioning. ââ¬Å"Scott, Iâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m sorry, I shouldnââ¬â¢t have. You see, Iâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ He was extremely nervous, but it was cute. ââ¬Å"Yes, Scott, Iââ¬â¢ll be your girlfriend,â⬠I giggled. At that moment, his face lit up like I had never seen him before. ââ¬Å"But, the thing isâ⬠¦ Weââ¬â¢ve known each other for six months, onlyâ⬠¦ But I am willing to try, because I love you,â⬠I smiled. I had never said these three last words to a guy in my life, and somehow it felt good. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m glad. And, I love you, too,â⬠he blushed, then gave me a quick kiss on the cheek. Honestly, I had no idea how these relationship things worked, but I guessed that Iââ¬â¢d just have to follow his lead. After a few weeks of being together, we finally went public. To my surprise, no one, or almost, judged us, not even Angelââ¬â¢s brat gang. Although, going public didnââ¬â¢t mean trying to make everyone jealous or uncomfortable. It meant not being shy or afraid to hold hands, or even kiss, around other people. When I talked about us to other people, it almost sounded like a perfect fairytale couple, even thought we werenââ¬â¢t. We fought a few times, nothing extravagant. I canââ¬â¢t imagine myself without him. Yet, another part of me knows weââ¬â¢re only sixteen, and I feel like that doesnââ¬â¢t really bother himâ⬠¦ ââ¬Å"Hey, Paige,â⬠said Scott, as he came over to me and kissed me. ââ¬Å"Hey,â⬠I smiled. ââ¬Å"Listen, I have something to ask you, and Iââ¬â¢ve been wanting to ask you for a very long timeâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ââ¬Å"Yes?â⬠What now? ââ¬Å"Willâ⬠¦ Will you love meâ⬠¦ Forever?â⬠Oh, god, what kind of a question was that? I canââ¬â¢t possiblyâ⬠¦ ââ¬Å"Scott,â⬠I chuckled. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢re only sixteen, remember? I love you, a lot, but you knowâ⬠¦ Anything can change between now and laterâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ What else could I say? ââ¬Å"I know, but stillâ⬠¦ Please answer my question. Will you love me, forever?â⬠Damn, he was determined. ââ¬Å"Iâ⬠¦ I donââ¬â¢t know, Scott. Please ask me some other time.â⬠He looked down. ââ¬Å"Alright. Well, I have to get going, I have, um, stuff to do.â⬠With that, he left me, standing on my porch, alone, wondering about what just happened. Later that night, I tried to message him, but he never replied. Maybe he was really busy? I tried to concentrate on something else, to get my mind off things. As I took out a piece of blank paper and a pencil, I heard a loud gun shot, not far from where I was standing. ââ¬Å"Mom? Whatââ¬â¢s going on?â⬠I asked, rushing downstairs. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s nothing, honey. Probably just some loud thunder. Now, please, go back to your room.â⬠I barely had the chance to speak, that I was already in my room. As I laid in my bed, I wonderedâ⬠¦ What happened? Where did that gunshot come from? I hoped it didnââ¬â¢t come from Scottââ¬â¢s houseâ⬠¦ Then, I fell asleep. I woke up the next morning with a disastrous call from Angel. ââ¬Å"PAIGE! ITââ¬â¢S IMPORTANT!â⬠Angel yelled. ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s more important than my sleep?â⬠I yawned. ââ¬Å"Scott.â⬠She answered. No way. That gunshot, it couldnââ¬â¢t beâ⬠¦ ââ¬Å"What happened?â⬠ââ¬Å"Heâ⬠¦ Last night, a robber barged in his houseâ⬠¦ Scott tried to defend himself, and get the guy outâ⬠¦ And he was armedâ⬠¦ Heâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ She cut her breathing. ââ¬Å"He got shot, Paige. Scott got shot, and heââ¬â¢s in the hospital.â⬠ââ¬Å"No, this canââ¬â¢t be possible! No, please, please tell me this is a lie!â⬠I cried. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m so sorry, Paigeâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ She sniffed. ââ¬Å"No. I have to go, sorry. Iââ¬â¢ll talk to you later, okay?â⬠I tried to keep myself from falling apart. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s fine, take all the time you need, Iââ¬â¢ll be here.â⬠ââ¬Å"Thank you, I love you.â⬠With that I hook up, and rushed out the house to the nearest bus that could take me to the General Hospital. ââ¬Å"Scottâ⬠¦ Where is Scott Adams?â⬠I shouted. There was no point in staying calm. I couldnââ¬â¢t. ââ¬Å"You must me Paige. Heââ¬â¢s right here, follow me. Beware though, he just came out of surgery so he wonââ¬â¢t be looking so good.â⬠This couldnââ¬â¢t be happening. 8 months of happiness, and this how it all crashes down. I canââ¬â¢t lose another person. As I walked into the room, I noticed his mother waiting outside the room, with a bunch of tissues filling her puffed face. ââ¬Å"Scott! Oh, Scott, please be alright,â⬠I said, worriedly. ââ¬Å"Paigeâ⬠¦ Iââ¬â¢m fineâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ He tried to smile. ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢tâ⬠¦ Youââ¬â¢ll be out in a week, right? Back home, smiling, talking long walks in the streets, holding handsâ⬠¦ All that fun stuff, in a week,â⬠I tried to cheer him up. All he managed to do was smile. He was barely able to do anything. That gunshot hit him too hard, as hard I would want to hit the guy who did this. For the rest of the week, I visited him, everyday after school, until very late at night. I couldnââ¬â¢t stand seeing him like this, yet I didnââ¬â¢t want to leave his side, in case they were my last moments with him. Angel has been helping me a lot, trying to get my spirit back up, but it was useless. Everyday, I brought him a red flower, reminding him that my love stands by his side. He was strong, and I was sure he would be able to face this. On Friday, after school, I went to see him, like I did every other day. As I was about to enter the room, the nurse stopped me. ââ¬Å"Miss Brooks, I just wanted to tell you that Scott will be fine, heââ¬â¢s weak, but heââ¬â¢s getting better,â⬠she smiled. ââ¬Å"Thank you, this makes me feel a lot less stressed,â⬠I grinned. She smiled, and left. ââ¬Å"Did you hear that, Scott? Youââ¬â¢ll be alright! Youââ¬â¢re getting better, and soon youââ¬â¢ll be out of here,â⬠I said, cheerfully. ââ¬Å"Paige, Iâ⬠¦ No, I wonââ¬â¢t make itâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ His voice was fading. ââ¬Å"What? No, youââ¬â¢ll be fine, please stay with me, okay? Itââ¬â¢s going to be fine.â⬠I took his hand, and gently squeezed it. ââ¬Å"I love you, Paigeâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ His eyes were slowly shutting. ââ¬Å"No, shut up, donââ¬â¢t say that, please. Donââ¬â¢t think like that, youââ¬â¢ll be fine, Iâ⬠¦ The nurse saidâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ I was extremely worried. ââ¬Å"The nurse came while I was sleeping, she couldnââ¬â¢t tellâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ His eyes slowly shut, and his hand started to cool. ââ¬Å"No, no, donââ¬â¢tâ⬠¦ Please, Scott,â⬠I couldnââ¬â¢t take this. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m sorryâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ He whispered. ââ¬Å"Yes,â⬠I slowly approached his ear. ââ¬Å"Yes, I will love you forever.â⬠He smiled slowly, as his heart rate slowed, too. At that moment, his chest stopped moving, his eyes shut, along with the rest of him. This couldnââ¬â¢t be. He couldnââ¬â¢t be gone. ââ¬Å"Scott! Scott, please wake up! Someone, help, he justâ⬠¦ He justâ⬠¦ Heââ¬â¢s dead,â⬠I cried, loudly. Tears poured down my face, as I couldnââ¬â¢t control my emotions. The doctors came rushing in, checking his pulse, trying to get him going again, but it was no use. The doctor turned to me, shaking his head, as a sign he was gone, forever. The doctors took him away, and I was too shocked to even breathe. I couldnââ¬â¢t hear anything, except for my heart beating faster than ever. ââ¬Å"Paigeâ⬠¦ Paige! Paige, we have to go,â⬠Angel shook me. ââ¬Å"I came here as soon as I got the news. Itââ¬â¢s very tragic, but you canââ¬â¢t stay here forever.â⬠ââ¬Å"No!â⬠I protested. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t want to leave! This is a dream, heââ¬â¢s not dead! Heââ¬â¢s not! Iââ¬â¢ll wake up tomorrow morning with a cute text from him telling me how much he loves me, and Iââ¬â¢ll smile, just like every time he texts me. This is just a dream. Angel, please tell me that this is just a dream,â⬠I sobbed. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢sâ⬠¦ Itââ¬â¢s not, Paige. Iââ¬â¢m sorry,â⬠she hugged me. I cried even louder. Itââ¬â¢s over. Heââ¬â¢s gone. Iââ¬â¢ve lost two of the most important people in my life during the past year, and I just couldnââ¬â¢t bear it. Angel walked me to her car, and drove us to her house. Four days later, it was time for the funeral. I had to do a speech, and I wasnââ¬â¢t sure if I could make it. As they called my name, Angel gave me a quick hug, and helped me get up and go to the microphone. ââ¬Å"Umâ⬠¦ Scott Adams was probably the best thing that has ever happened to me. He was the first person I met when I arrived here. He was also my only friend, at first. His smile was contagious, and he could make anyone smile, even during their darkest days. He was a special guy, someone Iââ¬â¢ll never forget, someone Iââ¬â¢ll never replace. At first, seeing him disappear in front of me was probably the worst thing ever. Yet, I now know that I was with him during his last moments, and that I loved him, very much. Someday, weââ¬â¢ll meet again, in another world. We had know each other for eight months, and been together for two. I will never forget the best times we had. To all of you who were also very close with Scott, Iââ¬â¢m sure his spirit is with us, right now, smiling to the fact that weââ¬â¢re all here, for him. Scott was different, and I think we all know that. He will be missed, but someday, many years from now when weââ¬â¢ll also fade away, weââ¬â ¢ll all meet again, weââ¬â¢ll all be happy again. Scott isnââ¬â¢t in any pain, he left us peacefully, and I am grateful to have known him. Thank you very much.â⬠I exited the stage, seeing everyone crying and clapping for my speech. Before going back to my seat, I approached the coffin where he laid, peacefully, saying my last words to him, ââ¬Å"Forever and ever.ââ¬

Faith in Kierkegaards Breaking the Waves Essay -- Kierkegaard Breakin
Faith in Kierkegaard's Breaking the Waves In Soren Kierkegaard's Fear and Trembling, he discusses the "Three Movements to Faith." For Kierkegaard, faith of any kind involves a paradox. This paradox, as well as Kierkegaard's suggested path to faith, is illustrated by the main characters of Breaking the Waves, Bess and Jan. Kierkegaard explains there are steps one can take towards faith; however, they are so difficult he believes only one person, the "Knight of Faith," has completed the movements. The first step is for one to make her/his wish the complete focus of her/his concentration. This finite desire must dominate one's consciousness, and must be the only wish she/he hopes for. Although the desire may seem impossible, it becomes possible when expressed spiritually. Kierkegaard calls the second movement the "infinite resignation": this involves the person acknowledging the impossibility of her/his wish. By resigning the finite desire, says Kierkegaard, the wish is bent inward. With this, the wish becomes religious, and thus not finite, but infinite. The third step involves...

Russo Japanese War Essay -- Russian Defeat, Distance
Is distance an insurmountable problem, judging from the Russian Experience in this conflict and the British experience in the War of American Independence? In order to clearly understand the points presented, insurmountable must first be clearly defined and understood in relation to the case. For this essay insurmountable means that Russia and the British were unable to overcome distance. Distance was the single factor that led to their inability to successfully wage war and defeat their opponents baring all other difficult matters were achievable. In the Russo-Japanese War, distance from theater and within theater was not an insurmountable problem for the Russians. In contrast, distance from and within theater proved an insurmountable problem for the British during the War of American Independence. The Russianââ¬â¢s defeat was a combination of a unaffectionate value of the object (government & people), inadequate leadership (government & forces), and a poorly trained and equipped force that could not t unite their land and sea forces (government & forces). However, the British were severely handicapped by vast area of operations; this impacted their ability to receive supplies, guidance, and reinforcements, as well as project its sea power effectively. By the late 1800ââ¬â¢s Russia had infiltrated the Far East, with two naval stations, Port Arthur and Vladivostok, forces based in Manchuria as well as the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railroad. Russia military desires in Asia were not of national security importance but that of imperialism and wealth, the former was most important to Nicholas II and the latter of Witte. The Far East expansion would allow Russia to initially capitalize on Manchuria and Koreaââ¬â¢s resourc... ... the war (Fuller, pg. 406). The trading capacity of Russia was also in shambles. Domestic trading and trading with Siberia was halted to support the sole use of Trans-Siberian railway for military transport (Warner and Warner, p.317). Revenue was down and the hatred for Nicholas II had increased. Nicholas II was warned that an object so remote and out of touch with the national spirit would only fan the flames of revolution (Koda, p.397). The Revolution was fully blown and the political and economic reform was being demanded. Boycotts and attacks on public officials were common. Nichols II content to lead a nation without the interest of his people, led Russia into war with itself. Russia was losing face value with the world. Matters on the home front needed immediate attention and the war was a distraction that could no longer be afforded or tolerated.

Athenians and Spartans :: essays research papers
The Spartan and Athenian civilizations carried on conflict from 431 to 404 B.C. (Bunson 195). Twenty seven years of blood shed and fighting was carried on between these peoples and their allies that were involved. The first ten years of the war was fighting and often called the Archidamian War after the Spartan king Archidamus II, following the fighting was the Peace of Nicias in 421 B.C., after this was eight unstable years of peace and more fighting, followed by the Ionian War (Bunson1277). These two civilizations were nothing like each other however some of their warfare techniques must have been similar to have fought for so long. The Spartan civilization was one that focused on physical and military power rather than academics (Jones 153). While men were still young they were taken from their families and went to a school that taught military training. If any men didnââ¬â¢t participate in this training their citizenship was denied to them. By the 6th century B.C. the Spartan army was known as the most efficient fighting force in Greece, the army consisted of 5000 people which were all citizens (Jones 154). Sparta was able to do this because their farming was done by subservient workers known as ââ¬Å"captivesâ⬠who were forced to do work on the land (Jones 154). By doing this the citizens were able to be fully devoted to their military. Unlike the Spartan civilization that was so focused on the military the Athenians were more involved with bringing culture and art into their lives. They were famous for their pottery with geometric designs, they also created the first outlines of the human body which would later bring them artistic achievement (Meiggs 193). During the 7th century B.C. there was much emphasis put on the craftsmanship and handicraft work that was being developed (Meiggs 193). One known figure in Athens that increased the culture was Pisistratus an able politician, he was responsible for opening up the city to Ionian philosophical and artistic influences. Also he made the first recording of the Panathenaea, a major collection of religious worship. Also because of other abled politicians and generals such as Aristides, Cimon, and Pericles Athens prospered for 50 years in political, artistic, philosophical and financial spheres (Meiggs 192). However this changed when in 431 the Peloponnesian War began because of Spartaââ¬â¢s uneasiness with the expansion on Athens ( Meiggs 195). The Athenians and
